June You Get It Winner Trent Hamm !!!
June You Get It Winner Trent Hamm !!! I came across Trent Hamms very popular blog a few weeks ago when Carolynn Duncan shot me a post he did about career management (15 More Things You Can Do Right Now To Help Your Career). I liked what I read so I subscribed, and have been extremely impressed since then. Let me pick apart a few things with regard to Trents blog and as it relates to his personal brand. Trent is just a normal person, like you and me. He found himself over his head with finances he calls it his complete financial meltdown and decided to pick the topic of finances apart (much like I tried to pick apart career management). Trents obvious goal is to share what he has learned, and what he continues to learn with anyone that cares about this stuff. He says he likes to write, so what a great medium a blog would be, right? Ill tell you right now, Trent is, in my book, an A-List blogger. Personal finances hits everyone, rich and poor and all of us in-between, every single day. Trent has a knack for picking up on various interesting issues and explaining them to his readers in a really, really simple writing style. Not to say his writing is for a sixth grader. But you dont have to have a finance degree to understand what hes talking about. Get it? The Simple Dollar? Heres what I love about his blog: The logo. Theres a lot of sexy logos out there, and everyone is trying to be really professional with this first-impression. I love how simple (the font) and dollar (can you see the letters have images from a dollar bill in them?) are a part of his logo. It looks cool, in my opinion, and it works for me. The what the heck is The Simple Dollar paragraph in the top right. It quickly and simply puts forth who the blog is for, and makes him very relatable. The Content. I talked about content vs. widgets in my series last week on my blogging secrets. I dont know how Trent does it but he has more than one very meaty post each day (not sure about weekends and holidays). If I had to pick 10 of the richest content sites on the Internet Im pretty sure he would be one of them. The tone. Trent is authentic. Transparent. Likeable. This dude is my buddy at least thats what I think when I read his stuff. He lives out in the cornfields of Iowa and talks about getting over his ego to have expensive and cool stuff. He talks about crunching numbers to compare Costco vs. Amazon vs. the grocery store. He walks the walk, obviously, and shares how he does it. He inspires people check out this post The Simple Dollar Convinces Someone To Quit Their Job. WOW! No brand dilution. Check out the categories on the right side of his page. There are a TON! Out of curiosity I clicked on computers wondering if it was going to get really geeky and go off-brand. Guess what? Its all on-brand! Go through the other categories and youll see that he stays on-brand for us. Seize the opportunity. Trent is doing all the right stuff. He has grown his readership to over 13,000 through feedburner, and Im sure more through other mediums. He has over 1,500 blogs linking back to him which puts him in the top 1,000 blogs in the world (considering there are over 80 million blogs, this is pretty big imho). Alexa puts his traffic as pretty darn good Guess what? This money guy is no dummy. There is opportunity to make money based on this popularity. He has the google ads various ways to monetize and Im guessing hes doing pretty good on this. Heres the deal, though. Trent does not go off-brand, or lower the standard of content, to monetize. He puts ME before a monetization opportunity (at least, thats how I see it). Great example of making some money off your blog without cheapening your brand! Blogroll is not overwhelming. A temptation of bloggers to get others to link back to you is to have a HUGE blogroll. Ive seen blogrolls that are so long that I cant even get into them its just too much. Trent only shows a handful of the blogroll links at one time, so it is quite digestible, and, respectful to the reader. Trent is doing all the right stuff. The results show it. His brand is in his content, not a flashy logo. His power is in his authenticity, and the depth of his knowledge. I am learning a lot about personal branding as I watch how he manages his blog. I hope you can too. Congratulations Trent! The Relaxation Options That Can Help To Reduce Stress
The Relaxation Options That Can Help To Reduce Stress Stress can be a huge problem in todayâs society. Many of us can flippantly say that we feel stressed or that we are feeling stressed out at any given time. But whether you just feel flustered, or you are well and truly feeling the pressures of stress, it can often be an unpleasant feeling. There are many causes of feeling stressed out. Some feelings can be related to work, perhaps feeling overworked, overtired, and finding it hard to meet deadlines or upheld your companys expectations of you. Other situations could include stress at home, perhaps in your marriage or relationship, with your children or with family members. Whatever the reason, I think we can all agree that we would like some solid methods to feel more relaxed when our emotions are heightened. Another huge factor to stress is the month we have just begun, December. The stress of Christmas and scheduling events or commitments. Who to buy for, having to send those Christmas cards, as well as ensuring that you fulfill family commitments, making the big dinner and even the stress of having to enjoy yourself and put a smile on your face. The whole month can be hugely overwhelming for some. So whether your stress is to do with Christmas or everyday occurrences, here are some relaxation options that can considerably reduce those stressed out feelings. Meditation Meditation is a great way to encourage you to relax more. If you have never done it before, it may feel a little strange at first. However, there are some great tutorials online, and you can even use smartphone apps that have things like guided meditation to help you with your thoughts and what you are feeling. The main focus of meditation is to focus on your breathing, and to allow yourself to empty your mind of cluttered thoughts. This can then help you to refocus and prioritise. Taking deep breaths If you find your stress levels reaching the boiling point recognise the symptoms and emotions and take yourself away from the situation for five minutes and just focus on breathing deeply. This can help you to calm your heart rate and just put some focus on the simplest of tasks. Inhale through your nose slowly and exhale through your mouth. While it can slow down your heart rate it can also help to lower your blood pressure. Next time you find yourself at boiling point, try this technique out and see the difference it can make. Slowing down In the heat of the moment and the thick of a situation it can be hard to step away from the situation entirely, so instead try and be more present in your circumstances and slow down. Try and take the time to just focus on one behaviour such as awareness to the scene and the situation you are in. This may even help you to see what you could do differently to get a better result. Booking in some rest and relaxation somewhere Sometimes you need a little help when it comes to the whole rest and relaxation thing. So it may be time to consider taking some time out from the busy schedule you have. You could consider a deep tissue massage as stress can really tighten your muscles and cause you to feel tension in your body physically as well as mentally. Or simply spending a morning or afternoon at the spa could certainly do the trick. If you donât have the means to pay for something like this, then just consider booking a days holiday from work, and spending it enjoying nature or even indulging a bit of catch up TV. Switch your phone off, keep the laptop away, and enjoy time in your own company for a while. Even just catching up on some sleep can do you the world of good. And if youre one of those who insists that you dont have time, combine something you do already with a treat for yourself. For example, try some Amor Bath Bombs and make bath time into a special experience. Laugh yourself silly Laughing can often be described as the best medicine, and when it comes to stress, laughing could be the ideal solution to get rid of those unwanted feelings and emotions. Laughing can help reduce the hormone that creates that stressed feeling, and help improve your mood and mental well-being. Next time you feel stressed check out funny videos on YouTube, or even just put on your favourite funny film to lighten the mood. Create a different atmosphere Sometimes it is the general atmosphere we are in that can really heighten our stress levels. So now would be the ideal time to change the atmosphere if you feel that it is having a negative impact on how you feel. Often doing things like lowering the lighting, making yourself comfortable, and even putting on atmospheric mood sounds like nature sounds or ocean sounds can help to relax your mind and help you to calm the situation. Become more active by taking a walk or trying yoga Many would agree that being active like going out for a walk can help to reduce anxious feelings and boost mood, so you can imagine that it can have just as much of a positive effect on stressed feelings as well. Walking and getting out for some fresh air is the simplest way, but also general exercise can also be great. Yoga is a form of exercise that many would associate with trying to reduce stress and anxiety, as there is a level of breathing techniques used within it. Again, there are often guidelines online if you have ever done it before, or heading to a beginners class could be the way forward. Be grateful Finally, gratitude is a great way to help when it comes to reducing stress. It places your thought process more on what is going well and all the good things you have rather than still focusing on more negative aspects, which tend to be what is causing you to feel stressed. Many people make this part of their daily routine as well, such as thinking about things to be grateful for when they wake up and just before they go to bed. I hope some of these options help you to reduce stress in your life!

Promotional Gifts as Part of the Nurturing Campaign - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Promotional Gifts as Part of the Nurturing Campaign - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Promotional products and business gifts are both time-tested ways of getting your name out there in front of the crowd. Nearly every major company spends time and resources on producing and distributing these items at tradeshows, product showcases, etc. But, have you thought of the concept through? Is the âgimmeâ the end of your campaign or is it the beginning? By that I mean, what role does the promotional gift play in your overall strategy, and more specifically what action does it compel the recipient to take? Any marketing effort should not exist in a silo, it should be a part of a larger, more organized campaign, with specific âcall-to-actionâ for the recipient. It may be true that your coffee mug or key chain or pen is actually a valuable giveaway, and recipients will find use with them, but if youâre spending money on these items, they need to justify âextra valueâ in your overall marketing plan. If recipients donât know why your coffee cup is special, they will use it to hold the pens they got from your competitor. For example, letâs say youâre giving away an item at a trade show. The item should have at least one additional use during the trade show to produce that âextra value.â Perhaps the coffee mug has a paper inside that the recipient can bring back later in the show for a discount or a free drawing. If youâre at the trade show and giving away items, use a numbering system or some other means to invite the recipient to participate in a focus group. Youâll need someplace to host the focus groupmaybe a hospitality suitebut the information you receive from live customer focus groups is invaluable, and canât be replicated exactly in any other way. If youâre doing well, the focus group will validate your success, and if not, you need to know where youâre falling short. At this stage of the game, every imprinted item should send the recipient to your Website or social media site. There, youâll need a promotion that references the trade show or item and will keep them coming back. Hereâs the problem: many industries have a trade show or conference thatâs once a year. That means youâre not going to engage with your trade show crowd for an entire year after the event? This is where the importance of a strong ânurturing campaignâ is demonstrated. A nurturing campaign is a comprehensive marketing effort that moves prospects along the buying process. Therefore, giving someone a pen is not as valuable as giving them a pen, then inviting them to that focus group, then following up with an additional thank-you item. The item should have some âbeyond the boothâ appeal. If itâs a pen, the pitch might be âwrite your own ticket.â Mini soccer balls or footballs could contain an offer to âscore.â Build in a QR code that recipients can scan with their cell phones that take them to additional content like a video or your website. Make no mistake, people will always smile at you when they receive something for nothing. Promotional items should be viewed as the start of the conversation rather than the end. Promotional items need to be part of a larger plan of customer engagement, not an end unto themselves. Use the promotional item to blend in with your product, your sales pitch, and the personality of your company. 3 Things to do before after the Law Fair University of Manchester Careers Blog
3 Things to do before after the Law Fair University of Manchester Careers Blog Guest blog post written by Avni Devgan, Law student at the University of Manchester The Law Fair is now less than a week away and for those who are interested in attending it, here is a list of things you should do before and after the fair to get as much out of it as you can. Before the Fair: Go through the list of exhibitors on the Careers Service website and try and get an idea of who you would be interested to interact with. Every organisation, firm and chamber has a different work ethos and demographic so make sure youre making the most of your time by meeting the ones that match what you may be looking for now, or in the future. You dont have to go on to every exhibitors website and scan all the information on it on to your memory. However, narrowing down what youre looking for by choosing between organisations that are national or international, engage barristers or solicitors, sponsor work visas or do not sponsor them, fund your training or dont, will help you gain some guidance to navigate your way through the fair. When youve got an idea of who youd like to meet (or even if you dont!), its a good idea to prepare a list of questions to take with you, such as how to get some work experience at the organisation, or about the work theyre engaged in. Pick up a Starting Point Guide for careers in law from the Careers Service (or view it online). If you think you may be interested in a career in law, do your research and find out what positions and sectors suit you. From being a solicitor to a barrister, and even a CiLex, these guides offer a lot of information about what pathways to working in law are currently available and how you can prepare yourself to work in them. Knowing about these pathways will also aid you in narrowing down what you like, who you would like to meet at the Fair and what you would like to ask them. Starting Point Guides are available from The Careers Service, in the Atrium, University Place, or online here. Law for law students guide Law for non-law students guide Try and keep an open mind. The Fair is a place where you can learn about things you may not know by interacting with people representing different legal organisations engaged in different legal work. Coming to the Fair with preconceived notions about what may not suit you may result in you losing out an opportunity to discover a legal career you could be truly passionate about. This doesnt mean that you shouldnt research on firms and careers that you know will be interested in working in, but do try and think outside the box and interact with exhibitors who you may not have considered while doing that research. After the Fair: Look for vacation schemes, mini-pupillage or any work experience related to the career pathway that interests you. If youve found something you think you would like to work in, look for some internships so you can experience what it would be like to work in that position or at that particular organisation. The exhibitors should have information on such internships and how you can apply for them, and they may also be advertised on CareersLink and websites such as TARGETjobs and Milkround. Book an appointment with the Careers Service for CV writing advice and interview practice. These appointments are extremely helpful as they help you to polish your CV and tailor it according to the internship you are applying for. Interview practice is a great way of knowing what you can expect out of interviews, and to prepare for them if youve gotten through the first round of internship applications. Research on whether you need to study further for the career youre interested in pursuing. Studying at university is expensive and it is important that you know whether you need to undertake further studies for the career youre interested in pursuing and if yes, how you can arrange the finances for it. Pick up a Starting Point Guide for the career youre interested in from the Careers Service to know more about this, and then make an appointment for career advice to decide how you should plan for this period of study. You can sign up for your free ticket in advance here, to avoid queuing on the day. I hope this helps and and that you have a great time at the Fair, good luck! 16 Clever Ways to Improve Satisfaction with Your Salary CareerMetis.com
16 Clever Ways to Improve Satisfaction with Your Salary â" CareerMetis.com About 53% of people in the world are underpaid, according to Time magazine, and you could be one of them. You lose your motivation for work when you feel like you are being underpaid.Sadly, there is no easy or conflict-free option of getting out of this situation. You have to work your way out of it in a difficult way.evalGetting paid equally and according to our performance is the key factor that keeps us going. But, if you feel like you are being exploited, then you probably should fight back.It has to be in a very systematic manner. So, these are the ways in which you should start preparing for your actual payment rights.1) Look at the Signs to See If You Are Being UnderpaidevalRather than just assuming that you are underpaid, first, try to look at all the signs. Look at the company performance. If it is performing exceptionally well but your salary is stuck â" then this is a sign.Or, if the website of your company advertises a similar post with more salary â" then it is definite ly a sign.2) Offline and Online Researches Are Your Best FriendsThere is no better option than to start researching. Do not rely solely on online information.Talk to your colleagues and other well-wishers.evalThey will help you to get clear information about the job market. So, you can find out about your situation even better when you start with this research.3) Compare Different Aspects of the Job EnvironmentYou need to compare different aspects of the job market with your job at hand.Look at the average salary rate, the market competition, the number of human resources available, and other variables.Do not just look for the salary range because there are other variables that you need to consider.4) Try out Other Opportunities to See Where You StandevalTry out for different organizations in secret. Not to switch exactly, but to see where you stand on the job market. The interviews and the offers will show you whether you deserve a higher salary or not. It is the most effective way t o conduct market research.eval5) Look at the Future Prospects of the CompanyIf you are new to the job, then itâs better to take some time to breathe. You cannot expect a sky-high salary right away. Some companies offer greater future prospects. You can get promotions quickly, which will increase your salary. So, you better look at the future prospects of the company.6) Access the Complexity of Your Roles and ResponsibilityYou should do a complete analysis of the job you have on your hand right now.See the roles that you have and the amount of responsibility as well. You should also evaluate the complexity of the job.It will help you to identify whether anyone else can easily do your job or not.7) Consider Both the Local and International SituationevalYou cannot just take one variable at hand. You should have a look at the international labor market as well. See their performance and evaluate whether you have any chances in that arena or not.You should also take note of your local hum an resource conditions at the same time.8) Make a Pros Cons List of Your JobIt is best if you make a pro and con list for your job.It gives you a complete view of the job that you have right now.evalThis means that you can have a clear vision of whether you have more negotiating power or not. If there are more cons, then you have more power and freedom to negotiate.9) Come Up With a Concrete List of Your Accomplishments Make a list of all the things that you have done for the company.Evaluate your work and make use of them for your arguments. It will help you to identify your contribution to the company. So, you will have better reasons to ask for a higher salary.10) Calculate the Future Value of the JobDo not be stuck with your present value as an employee.Look at the future value of the job as well. If the company is in an upper curve of progress â" then the value of the job will also increase. So, see the future value of your job and take it into consideration.11) Negotiate with Facts, Not with EmotionsGet your facts ready when you start to negotiate with your manager. You do not want to say stuff like, âI have been working with this company for a very long timeâ. It does not add a lot of value to your cause.Instead, make a list of arguments like, âI have contributed with the installment of this system for the companyâ.12) Make Sure to Have A Strong Bond with the CompanyThis is one of the prime factors of any conscious employee. You should have a strong bond with your company and the upper managers. This will ensure the value of your work. So, if you have a strong relationship with the boss, he is less likely to let you go from the company.13) Access the Possibility of Your Back-up PlanDo not try to negotiate just out of the blue.Have a back-up plan at hand. If your original negotiating progress does not go well, you can fall back on your back-up plan.Have multiple interviews ready. You can also accumulate some capital at hand, just in case.14) Team-Up If You Feel ExploitedIf you feel like it is a common pattern to exploit the employees inside the organization, then you should team-up.Look for other people who also want a raise.Try to make the whole movement more organized. It will have a greater effect on the management because they wonât be able to deny the rights of an entire group.15) Take Your Time with This Big DecisionDo not rush with the process. It is a very big step for you and for your career. So, take your time to rethink the whole process.Look at your current position, all the certainties and the uncertainties. Make sure that this is one of your last resorts for a better career.16) Make A Final Offer and Stay Firm with Your DecisionDo not be flexible with your decision.First, analyze your position and responsibility in the organization. Then, you should make a final offer to your employers. What is most important is that you stick to your decision. If you show signs of weakness, you might not get your desired salary. Have a strong belief in yourself.CONCLUSIONIt does not feel well to be cheated. But then again, the world is not fair. Get Your Materials Together First, make sure you resume is recruiter and hiring manager ready. Your resume is your calling card so make sure that it is a marketing document, which shows the impact youâve had on your current and previous employers. Next, finish completing your LinkedIn profile. Write that summary that youâve been meaning to for the last 6 months. Now that LinkedIn has changed their user interface, pay particular attention to the first 180 characters in your summary. Write in the first person and show some personality. Fill out the employment section with more than just job titles. Finally, if you donât have them already, get some personal business cards. Itâs not a good idea to use your company cards for networking events, remember your office email is owned by your employer not you. When creating a card include is your contact information and a brief blurb about you. Donât forget you can use the back for additional information. Add Twitter to your job search toolbox. If you donât have one already, set up a Twitter account. Follow recruiters, thought leaders, and reporters covering your industry. Be brave, take part in a Twitter chat. Start Planning Your Attack If you havenât already, create a list of target employers. Follow them on social media, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. Set up Google alerts for each company so youâll be aware when they are in the news. Ask everyone in your extended circle â" your friends, family, colleagues, acquaintances, alumni association, etc. â" who they know who works at any of your target employers. Donât discount your aunt Elizabeth, her stylistâs partner may work at your dream company. Research and choose some online job boards that might work for you. While you shouldnât rely on job boards, they can be one part of your job-search plan. Continually monitor the career pages on your target companiesâ web sites. Unless the jobs are confidential, usually when the person doesnât know theyâre being replaced, companies post open positions on their own sites. Develop a list of networking opportunities. Many industries have national organizations with local chapters that hold monthly meetings. Join your University alumni association, many of them have events nationwide as well. Have a networking strategy for each event, and go alone. Vow to make networking a way of life. Tuck a few cards in your wallet and carry them always. You never know who you may run into at the grocery store or the mall. Get Out, Get Going Once you are ready for whatever comes up, itâs time to create a job search plan. If youâre actively looking, try to schedule one networking event a week. If youâre passively looking or incredibly busy plan for one event a month. Donât be the person running around, handing out business cards, because you just heard your company is having layoffs. No one wants to hear that youâve just been to busy to network, but now youâre desperate for help. If you are changing careers, set up informational interviews with people in your target position or field. Itâs a great way to learn the good, bad, and ugly about a job. Remember, informational interviews are not the time to ask for a job, but they are a great way to make connections. Schedule some time each day or week, depending on how actively youâre looking, to peruse the job boards and your target companyâs websites. January 2018 is here. Thereâs no more time to waste. It will be December before you know it.
